We had a lovely evening with a delightful guide. We spent time looking and savouring the amazing view of the stars and planets and learning about the different types. A worthwhile tripFull review by mari0n487

I would recommend Sterland, with Jurg as your guide for any stargazing in Sutherland. 2 nights minimum, as if the 1st night is overcast you still have a chance for the 2nd night. They do recommend winter as the best time to see the stars, but Sutherland is a winter rainfall area. You need a day to see SALT and the day tour is well worth it. Early August should be fine.

SALT gives you a tour of the telescope hourly but you cannot see the stars from there. There are local star gazers in Sutherland however have telescopes you can see the stars with. Jurg is one of the locals. Runs a camp site at centre of town. Accommodation quite full this time of year. If you are a crowd, we stayed at starry night guest house which was very comfortable- self catering accommodation.

I did not do the evening tour as we wanted to go into SALT and see the actual telescope. If you go in the evening there are scientists working there so visitors cannot enter SALT. I would suggest you do the afternoon tour. Weather ??? well the Karoo Highlands are historically dry and cold but you never know. Regards Alan
