On Thursday, the Wellstar Health System announced that the former Atlanta Medical Center campus will be redeveloped.

Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center on Boulevard has been empty for two years, but big changes may be coming in the next few weeks.

Wellstar Health System announced Thursday it has selected the Integral Group to lead the redevelopment of the Atlanta Medical Center site into a revitalized community with housing, retail and healthcare resources.

Wellstar, which still owns the Old Fourth Ward property, closed Atlanta Medical Center in November 2022. The decision left the city with one Level I trauma center, Grady Memorial Hospital. Wellstar blamed the closure on falling revenue and increasing costs for staff and supplies.

While Wellstar remains the property owner, it was unclear which health services the system would reestablish there, if any.

The former Atlanta Medical Center site is taking another step toward redevelopment. Property owner Wellstar Health System announced Thursday it has chosen a developer to lead the project, just two days after the City of Atlanta’s redevelopment moratorium ended.

The plan currently includes affordable housing, residential properties, green space, neighborhood retail, new street access, and health resources.
