Australia has recently taken strong action against a dangerous online group called “Terrorgram” by imposing sanctions. The government aims to fight the rise in extreme right-wing groups, especially those spreading hate and violence.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced on Monday that the sanctions would be placed on Terrorgram, a decentralised network of encrypted Telegram channels and accounts focused on white supremacy. It is now a criminal offence for anyone to use or deal with the assets of, or make assets available to, Terrorgram.

Australians caught dealing with Terrorgram, an online network that promotes racially motivated violence, will now face up to 10 years in prison. It’s the first time the government has imposed sanctions on an entirely online entity.

Terrorgram’, which primarily operates on the Telegram social media site, has been accused of promoting violent white supremacy.

Extremist groups will continue evolving to evade counter-terrorism sanctions slapped on them in a bid to curb escalating anti-Semitism, experts warn.
