A fatal gangway collapse stresses an island celebrating Gullah Geechee culture. At least seven people died after the gangway collapsed at Georgia’s Sapelo Island on Saturday, state authorities said.

The aluminum gangway should have been able to handle the 40 or so people on it before “a catastrophic failure,” said Walter Rabon, commissioner of the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
