India's prime minister marked the opening of a tunnel in the northeast of disputed Kashmir that will grant all-year accessibility to a town that is isolated by heavy snow each winter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the strategically important Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir today. A project that will connect Gagangir to Sonamarg, giving all-weather access to the region to the Kashmir valley.

Prime minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to seven people, including labourers, who were killed in a terror attack in the area in October 2024.

The Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir connects Gagangir and Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district. The tunnel provides all-weather access to Sonamarg, replacing the avalanche-prone Z-turn road.

Sonamarg: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the 6.5km Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir's Sonamarg town, boosting year-round tourism in the town. Addressing the rally, the Prime Minister praised Jammu and Kashmir as India's crown."

The 6.5 km-long two-lane bidirectional road tunnel between Gagangir and Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district has a parallel 7.5-metre escape passage for emergencies.
