SpaceX launched a double moon mission today (Feb. 26), sending a private lunar lander and a NASA orbiter to hunt for signs of water on Earth's nearest neighbor.

The space exploration firm is scheduled to launch its six-legged Nova-C moon lander, Athena, on Wednesday as part of NASA's $2.6 billion Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. Athena is scheduled to launch aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

NASA's Lunar Trailblazer satellite is on a mission to map lunar water, a crucial resource for future space exploration, aiming to determine the form, distribution, and quantity of water on the Moon.
