The company is considering adding combustion engines to future model lines that were originally envisioned as EV-only

Porsche launched an electric-only second-generation Macan last year with plans to end first-generation production in 2026. However, the German automaker’s worst-selling model in 2024 was the Taycan. Sales for the first electric Porsche plummeted 50 percent last year, with only 20,836 Taycans sold. Autocar explained the potential shift:

The gas-powered Porsche Macan may live to see another generation after all. Porsche’s second-best-selling model was previously slated to go all-electric as the automaker slowly transitions global markets away from the outgoing model,

Slowing growth in EV demand, especially in the luxury sector, means Porsche will now continue to offer gas engines for longer.

In total, Porsche delivered 20,836 Taycan EVs to customers last year, down 49% from 2023. The lower total comes after launching the upgraded 2025 Taycan last year. Porsche also said, “The ramp-up of electric mobility is generally proceeding more slowly than planned” as part of the reason.

A new-generation gas-engine Macan? As reported yesterday by Autocar, Porsche is considering offering a new generation of the gasoline-powered Macan. Another possibility would be to modify the new electric Macan to fit it with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, using a gasoline engine as a generator to extend range.

An insider says Porsche is worried about the Macan EV's long-term sales, so a new ICE model might become necessary.
