Rwanda’s health minister said Sunday that an outbreak of the Marburg virus is not spreading in the country, citing the absence of new infections or deaths in the past six days.

Rwanda is effectively managing a Marburg virus outbreak, with 1,146 contacts identified and only three active cases remaining. The virus, transmitted through close contact with infected people, has caused 15 deaths.

There is no proven vaccine or treatment for infections with the virus, which is closely related to Ebola virus and causes similar symptoms.

A deadly, Ebola-like virus called Marburg is currently causing an outbreak in Rwanda. The country declared an outbreak of Marburg virus disease on Sept. 27 and has reported 58 confirmed cases and 13 deaths as of Oct. 8. Many of those who have been infected are health-care workers.

The Harwood Unified Union School District (HUUSD) has canceled the Harwood Union High School annual student trip to Rwanda due to concerns about safety and the Marburg virus. Harwood’s annual Rwanda trip generally takes place in February and has been an annual event since 2004 with some breaks for the pandemic,
