The idea behind making the control room at the railway station was to be close to the ground, and keep officials readily available in case of an emergency.

At least 18 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede that broke out on February 15 at the New Delhi Railway Station due to the Maha Kumbh rush. The stampede was preceded by a swell in crowd of passengers waiting to board trains for Prayagraj on platform number 14 and 15 of the station.
