Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree affirming the rights of the Kurdish Syrians, formally recognising their language and restoring citizenship to all Kurdish Syrians, state news agency SANA reported on Friday.
The Syrian army is moving to take control of areas previously held by the SDF in the governorate of Aleppo. Its forces have taken control of Deir Hafer, some 50km (30 miles) east of the city of Aleppo, after the SDF announced it would start withdrawing from its strongholds in the city.
Pointing to Sharaa’s attacks against Alawites, Kurds, Christians, moderate Sunnis, and Druze, Khromachou said extrajudicial killings, religious discrimination, and torture have persisted, even as many voices that once condemned Assad for the same actions remain silent.
Syrian authorities have asked Lebanese security forces to hand over more than 200 senior officers who fled to Lebanon after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, following a Reuters investigation that showed how the neighboring country was a hub for insurgent plotting.
Human Rights Watch on Thursday criticized the Syrian government for what it says is the lack of accountability on perpetrators of sectarian violence and killings on all sides in clashes between government-backed armed Bedouin clans and Druze militias in a southern province in July that killed hundreds of civilians.
