With the whims of the wind, a nearly 50-year-old castle has been repeatedly buried by sand and uncovered. But park staff aren’t sure the castle will be reburied this time.

Castle Rock State Park permanently expanded by more than 222 acres on Tuesday. The nonprofit Sepervirens Fund sold six properties to the state of California for $4.21 million to expand the park.

Castle Rock State Park is nestled in the mountains on the border of Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties, and is known for its coast redwoods, sandstone boulders and extensive trail system.

A coast live oak tree at Hearst Castle will be removed starting May 21, 2024, according to State Park officials.

“Castle Rock is a very unique geological area,” said a State Parks program analyst. Located outside Los Gatos, Castle Rock State Park is famous for its rock formations.
