Manchester United's plans to redevelop Old Trafford - potentially building a new 100,000-seater stadium - have been backed by the government.

At the end of the season, Manchester United will decide whether to build a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000, called “the Wembley of the North”, or renovate the current stadium to accommodate 87,000 people. It is likely to take six years and cost more than £2 billion to construct a new stadium on the nearby site.

Manchester United has received support from the British government for the club’s project to regenerate the area around its Old Trafford stadium.

Trafford town hall bosses have now backed a ‘once in a generation opportunity’ for the £4.2bn redevelopment of Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium - and with it, the regeneration of western gateway of the city along banks of the Manchester Ship Canal.

Manchester United's plans to redevelop Old Trafford have been boosted by fresh UK Government support. The Red Devils hierarchy have been waiting for an update from the Labour Party following their General Election victory in 2024 as the club looks to boost the stadium's current capacity.
