The NWS reports that wet and windy weather will continue across the islands today, with conditions gradually improving tonight as winds ease up some and rainfall coverage and intensity diminishes. A more typical trade wind pattern will then follow Tuesday through late this week, although it will remain rather breezy.
Expect periods of light to moderate shower activity today. Weather conditions will improve through the morning, but widely scattered showers will persist through the day. Energy behind a boundary moving across the islands from the north later tonight into Monday morning will be blown back towards us by the strong trade winds which will increase the probabilities for a return of moderate to locally heavy precipitation.
"Hazardous driving conditions due to powerful cross winds will pose a serious risk for drivers," the NWS warned.
At lower elevations, a high wind warning is in effect statewide as powerful northeast winds of 25 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, tear across the islands. Officials warn that “damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines and damage roofs,” noting that travel remains hazardous for high-profile vehicles.
A flood watch is now in effect for the islands of Niihau, Kauai and Oahu through Saturday morning.
"We know this storm system could bring conditions that make travel unsafe and threaten property," Hawaii Governor Josh Green said.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for the island of Maui until 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026. At 6 p.m., radar showed heavy rain over windward West Maui Mountains. Rain was falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour. The heaviest rain was falling between Kahakuloa and Waiheʻe.
There will be some sunshine with a breezy to windy trade wind pattern that will gradually wane through the rest of the week and become light winds by tomorrow night.
