Moldova’s crucial referendum on joining the European Union is too close to call, partial results showed Monday, as President Maia Sandu condemned an “unprecedented assault” on the country’s democracy.

A knife-edge margin of 50.09% voted "yes" in Moldova's pivotal referendum on joining the European Union, partial results showed on Monday, after President Maia Sandu said Sunday's twin votes had been marred by "unprecedented" outside interference.

Moldovan voters appear to have backed the Eastern European country changing its constitution and committing to joining the EU by the thinnest of margins. Official data put Yes on 50.31% and No on 49.69% on Monday morning, with over 99% of votes counted.

Moldova voted in favor of adding a path to the European Union to its constitution, and gave the incumbent president the most votes in elections Sunday, but neither result was the win leaders wanted.

The country’s aspiration to join the E.U. will now be enshrined in the constitution but the referendum was incredibly close.

Sunday's vote sees Moldovans facing a choice between pushing on with EU membership or keeping close ties to Russia.
