The repeated failure of the power grid and a hurricane that has swamped the island’s eastern end has many Cubans fed up, posing a challenge to the Communist government.

By Monday afternoon, around 89 percent of customers in the capital had power again, however many residents outside Havana remained without electricity, according to the authorities.

Electricity has been restored to half of Havana, the Cuban capital's power company reported Monday, four days after the start of a nationwide blackout that the authorities have struggled to address. The government has said that electricity is expected to be restored to most of the country by the end of Monday.

Havana was partially illuminated Monday night after the large-scale blackout generated protests and a stern government warning against any unrest.

Cuban residents are taking to the streets in outrage over the island's electrical grid collapse. NBC News's Valerie Castro reports as the country is slowly recovering from the outage.

Many Cubans waited in anguish Sunday as electricity on much of the island had yet to be restored days after an island-wide blackout. Their concerns were also raised as Hurricane Oscar made landfall in the southeastern Bahamas and was heading toward their country.
