Robert Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence at the Marcy Correctional Facility near Utica. He died after an encounter with officers at the prison.
Prison union issues statement following inmate death in Marcy
Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered the state Department of Corrections to fire 14 individuals involved in the incident, including corrections officers, sergeants and one nurse. Representatives for the New York State Corrections Officers and Police Benevolent Association said some members of their executive board have viewed the existing security footage of the incident.
