North Texas saw snow and sleet starting Thursday, and with that came power outages. Oncor’s outage tracking website states its teams and resources are monitoring weather conditions and are ready to respond to outages.

While ERCOT said it is prepared for the storm, there could be local outages in various counties. See maps of power outages across Texas.

CenterPoint Energy is not expecting “major winter impacts” to its electricity and natural gas infrastructure, the company assured its Houston-area customers.

This is different than in February 2021 when the there was a days long winter storm across the state. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the frigid temperatures lasted days in mid-February, with highs above freezing only once between Feb. 10 and Feb. 18.

Areas in Central Texas could see a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow between Thursday and Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS predicts cold, freezing rain Thursday morning to midnight on Friday and then some sleet and snow west of Austin between midnight and sunrise on Friday.

Snow and ice and snow are accumulating on bridges and overpasses of major highways, according to TxDOT. Motorists should drive with caution and expect traffic delays.

The first winter storm of the season is moving across North Texas. Up to 5 inches of snow, sleet and rain are expected to fall on the Metroplex. Any rain and sleet will freeze overnight, leading to potentially dangerous road conditions on Friday morning.

There was snow falling in parts of Collin County Thursday morning around 7 a.m. Thursday, according to WFAA reporters in the field.

Storm Warning is now in place for the Dallas, Arlington and Fort Worth areas from Thursday morning through Noon Friday. This is where several inches of snow could fall along with a glaze of ice, creating dangerous travel for those driving in for the Cotton Bowl.
