The Vessel, the honeycomb-shaped tower in Manhattan, which closed in 2021 after a series of suicides, reopened Monday with added safety features.

The Vessel in Hudson Yards reopened on Monday with floor-to-ceiling, cut-proof and water-resistant steel mesh barriers enclosing its stairways and platforms.

The Vessel will become a hive of activity again after developer put in new safety measures to prevent the type of tragedies that shuttered the landmark.

The Vessel, Manhattan's popular honeycomb-shaped pedestrian tower, is reopening with new safety nets after it was closed in 2021 due to a string of suicides. WNBC's Chris Glorioso reports.

Considered the centerpiece of Hudson Yards — a project led by global real estate firm The Related Cos. — the Vessel briefly reopened that year but only for several weeks before the fourth person, a 14-year-old boy, leapt to his death in July 2021.

Hudson Yards’ owners closed The Vessel for three years after four people died by suicide jumping from the structure.

Related Companies, which owns Hudson Yards, closed the structure briefly after the third suicide in 2021 – then reopened it a short time later with a new $10 admission fee, suicide prevention signs and a rule that banned solo visitors. However, it was still lacking the kinds of barriers that city and local community board officials requested.

The Vessel, a towering, honeycomb-like sculpture in Manhattan that was popular with tourists before a series of suicides forced its closure in 2021, will reopen Monday with new safety features. The 150-foot (46-meter) structure opened in 2019 as the centerpiece of the Hudson Yards development on Manhattan’s West Side.

The honeycomb structure includes 154 flights of stairs and levels and has steel mesh as a safety measure following four suicides.
