Church bells rang out for hours in celebration at Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia after one of their graduates was elected the first pope from the U.S. in the history of the Catholic Church.

While at Villanova, Prevost was an active member of the university’s long-standing pro-life club “Villanovans for Life,” the oldest pro-life college club, according to its website. Prevost was a close friend of the two founders of the group and attended various marches for life with the group.

F ather Peter Donohue, the president of Villanova University, was having lunch with a few of the school’s alums in a Chicago restaurant on Thursday when word got out that white smoke was billowing from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new Pope. Donohue asked the restaurant staff to turn up the TV sound.
