Master data management is the managing of data attributes that best describe a particular product or customer, according to Paraic Sweeney, vice president of product information management with IBM.

IBM announced Wednesday that it plans to buy MDM (master data management) vendor Initiate Systems. Terms of the deal, which is scheduled to close in the first quarter, were not disclosed.

The new release will be available before the end of the year. And the IBM Master Data Management Server is slated for availability in early 2008 following a beta program late this year.
