Chinese tourists are expressing fears about traveling to Thailand – with some cancelling their trips – following the high-profile case of a Chinese actor’s abduction to a Myanmar scam call center.

The brief abduction of a Chinese actor who was trafficked into Myanmar to work in a scam camp has rattled travelers from a country that Thailand relies on for tourism.

Authorities in Thailand are making concerted efforts to strengthen border security to prevent human trafficking gangs from using the country as a transit point.

Thailand's tourism sector is grappling with a surge in hotel and flight cancelations from Chinese tourists following the high-profile abduction of actor Wang Xing, raising concerns about the country's recovery efforts.

Thai police previously reported that Wang Xing had been lured into Myanmar by fraud groups and had lost contact with his friends and family near the border between the two Southeast Asian nations

He stressed that Thailand itself doesn't have a problem with human trafficking. "Thailand is still safe. The only concern for us is that the criminals use Thailand as a transit country," he said, adding that a multisector meeting will be held soon to find ways to help prevent travelers from becoming victims of human trafficking.

The Chinese Consulate General in Chiang Mai, Thailand told the Global Times on Tuesday evening that Tak Immigration met with the Chinese actor Wang Xing who had gone missing at the Thailand-Myanmar border and is currently conducting relevant inquiries in accordance with regulations.

Authorities found Wang on Tuesday in Myanmar and brought him to Thailand for questioning, Thai police said. Photos and videos showed Wang sitting with the police in the Thai border town of Mae Sot with his head shaved.
