President Donald Trump threw a curveball into the Russia-Ukraine war earlier this week, announcing that the U.S. will provide offensive weapons, including Patriot missile batteries, to Ukraine through NATO allies.

As Russia delays peace negotiations with Ukraine, U.S. elected officials in Congress are considering a new sanctions bill to force Russia to end its war.

The co-sponsors of new bipartisan U.S. sanctions package targeting Russia have briefed European allies and Ukraine on the legislation.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said "a turning point regarding Russia invasion of Ukraine is coming" amid a bipartisan effort in Congress to impose new economic sanctions on the Kremlin.

Rutte made the comment while meeting with senators in the US Congress the day after President Donald Trump announced new weapons for Ukraine.

Trump threatened to impose 100% secondary sanctions on Russia within 50 days if Russia doesn't wind down its attacks on Ukraine, a move supported by Sens. Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, who have been pushing for legislation to impose harsher sanctions on Moscow.

That included a Monday joint statement from Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham and Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal calling Trump’s threat of ramped-up economic penalties if Russia doesn’t cut a peace deal in next 50 days “a real executive hammer to drive the parties to the negotiating table.”

Snapback” sanctions will be triggered by the end of August if Tehran fails to make concrete progress to limit its nuclear program.
