By ensuring each team gets a possession, NFL overtime became a lot more fair. Cramming it into 10 minutes, however, means a few more ties each season.

Overtime will remain 10 minutes in the regular season, but both teams will now have a possession, regardless of what happens in the first drive.

Among the additional rule changes are the expanded use of replay assist and touchbacks resulting in the ball placed at the 35-yard line.

While most of the focus was on potential NFL rules is on the future of the tush push, the league has reportedly approved two other changes for the 2025 season. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, league owners voted in favor of allowing both teams to possess the ball in overtime and expanded replay assistance.

NFL owners on Tuesday approved a tweak to the regular-season overtime period, mirroring postseason rules that guarantee that each team will be allowed to possess the ball on offense. The rule was one of several passed by owners.

Starting this fall, each team will get an opportunity to possess the ball in overtime during the regular season, just like in the playoffs. Under the old rule, regular season OT games would end if a touchdown was scored on the first possession.

The NFL is changing its overtime rules again, aligning them with what they did in the postseason last year. Starting this coming season, when the game reaches the 10-minute overtime, both teams will be allowed a possession.

Last year, if a kickoff hit the end zone or went out the back of the end zone for a touchback, the ball would be placed at the 30-yard line. Now, a touchback will be placed at the 35-yard-line, according to CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.
