SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Rite Aid has filed for bankruptcy, and its pharmacies will close across the county. In New York State, 178 stores will close. Some of these stores are located in Central New York, specifically in Syracuse.

UR Medicine is advising more than 1,500 patients who use Rite Aid pharmacies to move their prescriptions to other pharmacies in advance of the drug store chain closing its doors.

Defunct pharmacy chain Rite Aid is offloading assets, including over 1,000 stores. Seeing an opportunity, several other retailers, including longtime rivals, are lining up to buy them. So far, CVS Pharmacy is taking the lion’s share.

Four Walgreens stores in New York will close in the coming weeks as part of a reorganization plan announced last year and implemented after a private equity firm acquired the national drug store chain in March. The Walgreen closings come as pharmacy chain rival Rite Aid is filed for bankruptcy and plans to close all of its stores.
