Firefighters were ambushed by a gunman while responding to a brush fire in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Sunday, according to the local sheriff's office.

The suspect who police believe gunned down two firefighters Sunday after starting a brush fire in Idaho wanted to pursue a career as a firefighter himself, his grandfather told CNN.

Roley had some sort of interaction with the firefighters he shot and killed when they arrived on the scene of the fire, Norris said, though he provided no details on what occurred. The suspect was known to have expressed interest in becoming a firefighter himself, the sheriff said.
