After Texas Republicans this week released a new congressional map proposal to help the GOP pick up five additional seats in next year’s midterm elections, California Governor Gavin Newsom wants to give President Donald Trump the taste of his own medicine.

The move comes after a marathon public hearing on the plan in the state Capitol on Friday and less than a week after state Republican legislators proposed the new maps. Republicans hold a majority in the Texas state legislature;

The governor plans to go through the Legislature to usher in a map with more Democratic seats if Texas tilts its map to the right, according to a person with knowledge of Newsom’s thinking.
