Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday said he would step down in the coming months after nine years in power, bowing to legislators alarmed by his Liberal Party's miserable pre-election polling numbers.

Trudeau's decision, while not unexpected after weeks of growing pressure from his own caucus, brings instability to Ottawa just as Canada is trying to tamp down Donald Trump's threat of devastating tariffs.

Justin Trudeau announced Monday that he was also stepping down as leader of Canada’s Liberal Party. He will remain in both roles until a replacement is chosen.
