There have been previous grizzly bear attacks in the forests of southwestern Montana, but investigators found no evidence of any bears at Kjersem's campsite. They're now investigating 35-year-old Kjersem's death as a homicide, after an autopsy revealed he was killed by multiple chop wounds inflicted by an unknown weapon.

A man’s death that was previously reported as a bear attack is now being investigated by Montana authorities as a homicide. On Oct. 12, the body of 35-year-old Dustin Kjersem, of Belgrade, was discovered inside a tent in the wilderness north of Big Sky in Gallatin County.

Dustin Kjersem, 35, was found dead in his tent with “chop wounds” on Saturday, the authorities said. No arrests have been made.

After a friend reported that Dustin Kjersem may have died from a bear attack last Saturday, Montana authorities confirmed he was "brutally" murdered, but have yet to find a suspect.
