To identify migration routes and timing, ascertain staging areas, clarify breeding-range boundaries, and find previously unknown breeding colonies, the researchers are equipping several individual brant with GPS transmitters, which resemble tiny backpacks. Atlantic brant spend the winter primarily along the coast of New Jersey and Long Island, New York. During the spring, they migrate about 2,000 miles to breed in the eastern Canadian Arctic. The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Canadian Wildlife Service are working on a multi-year, collaborative Atlantic brant migration and breeding ecology study.
