Binghamton, located in the Southern Tier region of New York State, has a rich history that dates back to the 1700s. The area was originally inhabited by the Susquehannock and the Iroquois tribes, who used the Susquehanna River for transportation and fishing. In 1786, William Bingham, a wealthy Philadelphia banker, purchased a large tract of land in the area and named it Bingham's Patent.
