U.S. Coast Guard crews, including members of Oregon’s Astoria station, pulled off a dramatic helicopter rescue in western Washington on Wednesday after continued heavy flooding stranded four residents in an attic. Officials called in the aircraft because ground crews were unable to reach the stranded Washingtonians as floodwaters as high as 10 feet surrounded the house, according to the Coast Guard.
