Why did the salamander cross the road? To get to the breeding pond of course! Every spring, Spotted Salamanders make a perilous journey to a nearby pond to breed. This can somestimes mean crossing roads, which is dangerous for these slow-moving amphibians. They are hard to see on the road, especially in the dark and rain. I flipped this northern red salamander and was so distracted by its vibrant colors that I somehow did not even notice there was another!
