January 31st - on this day in 2007, a Sea Launch Zenit-3 SL rocket was to launch the NSS-8 telecommunications satellite for Dutch operator SES World Skies. The launch took place from onboard the Odyssey launch platform, positioned in the Pacific Ocean, some 370 km Southeast of Kirimati, on the equator. However, the launcher exploded shortly after engine ignition as a result of debris in the RD-171 engine's turbopump, leading to the loss of the spacecraft and damaging Odyssey. | NASASpaceflight.c
