The Destroyer That Battled Hiei, USS Laffey At Guadalcanal in November 1942, USS Laffey charged straight at the battleship Hiei—closing to just 20 feet and blasting her bridge, wounding Admiral Abe himself. Surrounded and hammered by shells and torpedoes, Laffey fought at point-blank range until she finally broke apart.
