Today is National Day of Clogging / International Day of Clog Dancing ! Clogging has always been an important part of Fontana Village's history—the holiday honors the contributions of Bill Nichols, Fontana's longtime staff photographer and dancer extraordinaire, to the art of modern clogging. In the early 1940s, amidst the construction of the Fontana Dam, a joyful and rhythmic tradition was born. The Fontana Square Dance Team emerged from the bustling work-camp environment, later transitioning into a key feature of the Fontana Village Resort's vibrant community life. This transformation was spearheaded by a recreation director who, recognizing the potential for unique marketing, incorporated the Fontana Square Dance Team and the Fontana String Band—now known as the Fontana Ramblers,
