Giraffes like this Angolan giraffe at Jardim Zoológico are the world's tallest mammals, thanks to their towering legs and long necks. Typically, these beautiful animals roam the open grasslands across Africa in small groups of about half a dozen. Using their height to their advantage, these ungulates browse on leaves and buds in treetops that few other animals can reach, relying on their 21-inch long tongue to help successfully secure each meal. #WorldGiraffeDay #giraffe #mammal #animal #wildlif

Today is World Giraffe Day — a chance to recognize not only the giraffe, the tallest land animal, but also its lesser-known relative, the okapi. These two species share a direct evolutionary link and unique biological traits, despite living in very different habitats. Understanding what connects them helps us protect them both. | Okapi Conservation Project

Translocations are a valuable and important tool in our efforts to secure a future for giraffe in Africa. They require a huge amount of planning, logistics and collaboration to ensure success. In Operation Twiga IV we supported the Ugandan Wildlife Authority in moving 15 critically endangered Nubian giraffe from Murchison Falls National Park to Pian Upe Game Reserve in Uganda to create a brand new population. Watch this exciting video to learn more about this epic and history-making operation. U

Mpopi and Gloria have a new home!!! As part of the Baringo Giraffe re-wilding programme, in collaboration with @kenyawildlifeservice , we released 2 Giraffes back in the wild. It's a bitter sweet event as we bid goodbye to 2 members of our Giraffe tower. This year alone, We've released 5 individuals back to the wild. What a year!! Our giraffe conservation partners at the Somali Giraffe Project in Kenya recently rescued a wild giraffe from a wire snare that was wrapped around its leg. It was dragging the wire and a large tree branch around when a community member spotted it and reported it to our team in Kenya. Our conservation partners were able to act quickly and successfully remove the wire snare and release the giraffe to save its life. | Houston Zoo

Why Giraffes are Facing a “Silent Extinction”
Aug 13, 2019

WildAfrica on Instagram: "📅 Ahead of #WorldGiraffeDay, we're highlighting the challenges facing Africa’s tallest animal. 📉 Giraffe populations have dropped by nearly 40% in the last 30 years, from around 155,000 to 111,000. 🦒 The Nubian giraffe, West African giraffe and Thornicroft’s giraffe are on the brink of extinction – with just a couple hundred of each subspecies left. 🌍 This decline is primarily driven by habitat loss from expanding agriculture, mining, and infrastructure.
